My Adventures With Superman has started airing this month! I was a storyboard artist and freelance character designer for the show in mid-to-late 2021 until summer of last year. Lately, it feels like nothing is precious and no one at the top in Hollywood is really valuing the artistry and products that are made (which, surprise surprise, both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are on strike now), so I’m really glad that the show has survived the machine and is seeing the light of day. I’ll be posting my boards and designs next month due to still getting things set up. I’ve seen a bit of the talk and fanart online and people seem to really be enjoying the show so far which is always good to see. If you haven’t check it out already, you can watch the first episode for free on Youtube! Here it is below (UPDATE 7/28/23: Adult Swim privated the video!! >:( that really freakin sucks…i hope they put it back up soon….?):
I’ve only read a few of the comics (Superman: Secret Identity and the current run of World’s Finest to be exact), but i love the earnest, golden retriever energy of Clark, which I think goes really nicely with Lois and Jimmy’s shenanigans. I got to do a bit more light-hearted and comedy leaning scenes in this show which was a nice change from what I’m normally known for (I did do some drama though). It was a real honor to work with such an amazing team (please watch the credits of each episode to see their names!!), with big thanks to Diana Huh, Jen Bennett, Dou Hong and our showrunners Josie Campbell, Jake Wyatt, and Brendan Clogher. I’ve really, really thankful I was never assigned a fight scene. :)
I’m getting ready to ramp up for my next gig starting in another week, but overall it’s been pretty slow. There’s a lot of things that I no longer have available to me here that I used to have in LA, even if I wasn’t always pursuing them. There was a huge meet up at the old Cartoon Network Studios building to say goodbye to it. It was put on by my friend and fellow storyboard artist Marie Lum. Here’s what I wrote on Twitter about it:
To be honest, I wasn’t feeling that down about it because I think it’s the people who mattered way more and made working at CN an overall positive memorable experience for me. Do I wish I had drawn something in the stairwell? A little. But I don’t think it matters in the long run (do hope they save the walls cause I’m sure they’ll be worth a ton of money one day and I’d love to see those legal disputes lol). I know the people who worked in that building will continue to make really cool stuff, and that matters a ton. So, I really glad they were able to say goodbye to it one last time before it goes to…whoever.
Moving on from that, my deer girl sticker sheets will be going back on sale in a few weeks starting August 7th. So, if you missed the pre-ordering period, you now have another chance to pick some up! I thinking about expanding the idea as well. I’ve had some ideas in the past but it never felt like the right time to execute them. This time though, I would like to see how far I can possibly take the idea on my own. Truthfully, I would really like the compile a book with illustrations and short stories, so I have a lot planning to do.
Lastly, the comic I’m working on with my friend Wynton Redmond will get done no later than end of September 30th, 2023, or earlier I guarantee it. I’m posting it here in this newsletter for accountability’s sake. I DO NOT want to have this project still floating around in 2024. I’ll be posting more about it in the next newsletter where I will have definitely made a lot of progress! >:)
